Amlodipine

• inhibits calcium influx into vascular smooth muscle cells and myocardial cells, hence decreases peripheral vascular resistance
• Reduces rates of cardiovascular events and hospitalisations compared with enalapril

Atenolol

• Effective in lowering brachial BP and aortic stiffness in patients with isolated systolic BP hypertension

Combination

• Significantly lowers mean 24-hour diurnal and nocturnal systolic and diastolic BP and hypertensive burden
